A unique thing to do in Lisbon: make your own jewellery

Lisbon has viewpoints, trams and custard tarts — and every guide mentions them. But there's another way to get to know the city and take it home: sit at the bench of an author jewellery atelier and make a piece with your own hands, using a deeply Portuguese technique.

Why it's different from a visit

On a visit, you look. In a workshop, you make. For three hours the city stays outside and all your attention goes to the metal: the wire twisting, the torch flame, the moment the solder flows and the piece becomes whole. It's a slow, focused experience, rare on a travel itinerary.

And unlike a souvenir you buy, the piece you take home was made by you. It carries your marks, your small imperfections and the memory of that afternoon.

Who it's for

Couples

Making two pieces side by side is a different way to celebrate an anniversary, a trip or a proposal. Some make matching pieces; some make one for each other.

Friends and family

Groups of up to 5, with close guidance. Perfect for a hen party, a birthday or simply doing something together that isn't dinner.

Visitors to Portugal

Filigree is a typically Portuguese technique with centuries of history in the north. Sessions are held in English or Portuguese, and you leave with a piece that tells a Portuguese story — read more about filigree and the Viana heart.

Gift seekers

A workshop voucher is a present that is lived and kept. We explain everything in how to give a jewellery workshop as a gift.

Which workshop to choose

  • Portuguese Filigree — 3 hours, no experience. Delicate and detailed, with the most "Portuguese" result.
  • Forging — 3 hours, no experience. More physical, with hammer and anvil; great if you like a hands-on gesture.

In both you leave with your piece the same day.

Practical tips

  • Book ahead if your travel dates are fixed. Workshops are by appointment and groups are small.
  • Pick the time of day that fits your plans: morning, afternoon or late afternoon.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes, and tie long hair back.
  • The atelier is on Av. do Colégio Militar, Lisbon. Full directions come with your confirmation.

How to book
